Car Rentals Gone Horribly Wrong

Can renting a vehicle be such a complicated thing to do? It should include making arrangements to rent, arriving early will all the necessary personal paperwork, which will include a valid driver's or IDP license along with a valid and active credit card to complete the renting process; shouldn't it?

Well if you think that you have this one in the bag it is important to realize that you may run into a few obstacles throughout the process. One of the biggest factors that can make or break your vehicle rental experience is the company that you are dealing with. A good company will back you up and stand behind their rental vehicle and a company that is just looking to turn a profit could very quickly sell you out if a serious issue arises. Understanding this is key to protecting yourself during the rental process.

At this point you might be asking what you can do to alleviate problems at this part of the process. In this industry, it is common knowledge that many people just don't know or forget the important documents to make this process a breeze to get through. The rental company, if it is a good one will already have let you know what documents you should bring with you to their counter. You will of course need insurance proof as well documentation for additional insurance if necessary, rental age restrictions guidelines and any additional paperwork associated with a debit card you intend to use. This should help make the counter process go smoothly.

Usually headaches follow those who are unprepared when trying to rent a vehicle and a deadline is fast approaching. Other problems that you should be aware of and have a clear understanding of how the rental company will handle these situations generally include vehicle breakdowns that just happen while you are on the road or accidents that just happen during the trip. The last thing anyone who is renting a vehicle needs is to be stranded, pretty much holding the bag and the possibility of skyrocketing bills that such events can incur. This can easily have the characteristics of a very bad experience.

In reality there have been some rental companies that have levied charges against customers that have successfully paid for and honored their rental agreement, several months after the fact. While this is certainly not the standard common procedure for any reputable company there are however instances where the company paid fees and tolls up front and were trying to recover these monies. This is just another good example why anyone should always know the details of their rental agreement before they start the rental journey.

Renting a vehicle with the right company usually results in a positive rental experience. The best way to have a good experience is to choose a company with a good reputation and get a clear understanding of what will and won't be covered in advance. Doing so will help you avoid having a vehicle rental go horribly wrong.
